Most of you may think that we take advantage of this flower heavy holiday and mark up our pricing to match up with supply and demand. However, you may not realize that those mark ups are being made well before the roses enter our shop. Growers justify raising prices, because it costs them more money to grow the larger quantities of quality roses for Feb. 14th. They have to sacrifice multiple blooms on one rose bush just to get that one nice bloom that comes up the stem. We don't mark our roses up the full mark-up, if we did it wouldn't be fair to our clients.
So, while the elves at The Hidden Garden are busy shooting arrows to your loved ones, let us share some Valentine's Day fun facts:
* 53% of women said they would dump their boyfriend if they didn't get them anything on Valentine's Day.
* The value of cut flowers produced by operations with $100,000 or more in sales in the U.S. in 2010 was $375 million. Of this value $17 million, or just over 22%, was due to roses.
* Of fresh flower purchases only, Valentine's Day ranks No. 1, capturing 36% of holiday transactions and 40% of holiday dollar volume.
* Twenty-three percent of adults purchased flowers or plants as gifts for Valentine's Day 2011; of those, 61% were men and 39% were women.
